Skincare Myths

We all want beautifully clear and luminous skin, don’t we?

Your skin is the largest organ in your body. This doesn’t mean it is any easier to care for. Many people still follow skincare routines from years ago when there are amazing, newer products out there. But there is such a range, how do you know what is a fad and what is best?

Worry not! I’m here to set the record straight and help you separate skincare fact from fiction.

Myth #1: You need to scrub your face.

When it comes to cleansing your skin, gentle movements are best. Scrubbing can irritate the skin and over exfoliation can result in breakouts.

I recommend a cleanser that has been advised for your specific skin type and lukewarm water. We have an amazing range of medical grade skincare here at The Aesthetic Treatment Rooms to choose from.

Myth #2 : You only need to wear your sunscreen while outdoors on sunny days

You should be using a daily SPF with a minimum of factor 30. Regardless of whether it is sunny or not. This helps to prevent UVA and UVB skin damage. Sun exposure can severely dehydrate your skin, resulting in a loss of moisture and the breakdown of collagen and elastin. These substances are responsible for the skin’s strength and elasticity.

Over exposure to the sun can result in signs of premature aging, including undesirable hyperpigmentation. Wearing an SPF of 30+ should be a daily habit, not only when exposed to direct sunlight but also when indoors too. Research has shown that the blue light emitted from our mobile phones, computers and other electronic products can also age our skin.

Myth number 3 : If you have oily skin you don’t need to moisturise

You should be moisturising daily regardless of how oily your skin is. However, you may prefer opting for a more lightweight moisturiser and smaller amount if you feel your skin is oily to avoid congested pores.

Oily skin is already prone to clogged pores, acne, and blackheads. Hyaluronic Acid moisturiser is great for both oily and drier skin as it is naturally found in the body.

Myth number 4 : You can only get Vitamin D from the sun

You can get vitamin D from the sun. However, that comes with the risk of skin damage and premature aging. If you have a naturally darker complexion your higher concentration of melanin in the skin can prevent the sun from being an effective source of Vitamin D.

I recommend getting your vitamin D from nutrient rich foods such as Tuna, Mackerel or Salmon. There are also many different Vitamin D supplements available.

Most people want a quick fix miracle treatment; which is often why it is so difficult to separate fact from fiction when it comes to your skincare.

Here at The Aesthetic Treatment Rooms we want to help you on your skincare journey. It’s important to consult a qualified professional for advice before trying anything drastic on your skin.
